The Cota 2000 mountain refuge is located along the famous Transfagarasan road, in a curve before the entrance to the Bâlea - Capra tunnel, approximately three km away from the beautiful Bâlea Lake. It impresses with its grandeur, its construction based on serpentines, its location in a very tight curve, the color representative of first aid cases - visible red, its unique architecture, very easy access, but also with the dreamlike landscapes captured in winter or summer. This refuge is intended for mountain rescuers, as well as mountain adventurers who need shelter in case of adverse weather conditions or other problems. It is not a tourist accommodation unit. Its compartmentalization includes several rooms, including a first aid room, and on the third floor is the rescue base dispatch center. The unit also has SUVs and ATVs necessary for interventions in case of help. The Cota 2000 Mountain Rescue Refuge is the highest in the country, being a safe place for mountain adventurers and a base for the mountain rescuers' coverage area. It is part of the tourist area of the Făgăraș Mountains, famous for visiting the Moldoveanu Peak (the highest peak in Romania), but also for the most appreciated mountain road - Transfăgărășan. It is visited annually by millions of tourists both for its beauty and for the tourist attractions that are found in the area, such as: Poienari Fortress, Vidraru Dam, Capra Waterfall, Bâlea Lake and many others.
The last portion of the Transfagarasan Arges, before the tunnel to Balea Lake The Cota 2000 - Transfăgărăşan mountain rescue base operates 24/7 all year round. The staff at Cota 2000 is provided by mountain rescuers, supported by volunteers.
