About

The Roman Fort of Jidova is the most important and best preserved military construction of its kind on the Transalutanus Limes route, being also the only one built of stone. Here, in the site museum into which the fort has been transformed, you can see the strong stone enclosure wall, with its gates and adjacent towers, the officers' building, the commander's residence, the warehouse where provisions for the soldiers and horses were stored, as well as the ingenious heating system specific to Roman technology, the so-called hypocaustum. Jidova also provides explicit evidence of the presence of a military unit from the Roman imperial army that was active on the Transalutan limes and was stationed in this fort. This was an auxiliary unit made up of fighters from Commagena, a region of the Roman province of Syria: Cohors Prima Flavia Commagenorum.

The exhibition, opened in 1970, includes ceramic objects (oil lamps, bricks and fragments of tiles with inscriptions, amphorae, pieces of pavement and mosaic, pieces for hypocaustum), weapons (arrowheads, spears, knives), military equipment accessories, etc. Part of the Roman buildings are preserved within the camp (Principia – the command post, Praetorium – the commander's building, the officers' building, Horreum – the grain store). On the south side, a curtain tower has been reconstructed, as well as part of the Praetoria gate towers (the main entrance gate), the semi-circular tower in the south-west corner, and the other towers of the Decumana, Dextra, and Sinistra gates on the north, east, and west sides.
The Roman Fortress of Jidova is administered by the Argeș County Museum, an institution coordinated and financed by the Argeș County Council.

Every year, the Roman Fort of Jidova hosts the historical reenactment festival "TRANSALVTAVNVS FEST. At the Gates of the Empire," an event organized by the Historia Renascita Association, in partnership with the Argeș County Council and the Argeș County Museum. The festival program includes thematic presentations, military demonstrations, ancient pentathlon, interactive and demonstrative workshops—ancient gastronomy, blacksmithing, coinage, chain mail, weaving, archery, as well as reenactments of battles between Roman and barbarian legions.
