The Vidraru Dam and the artificial lake

The Jidova Roman Castrum is located at the entrance from the south in Câmpulung Municipality. It is the most important and best preserved military construction of its kind on the route of Limes Transalutanus. In the museum where the castrum was transformed, the powerful stone enclosure wall can be seen, with the adjacent gates and towers, the building of the officers, the residence of the commander, the storehouse where the provisions for feeding soldiers and horses were housed, as well as the ingenious heating system specific to the Roman technique, the so-called hypocaustum. The exhibition includes ceramic objects (rushlights, bricks and tile fragments with inscriptions, pavimentum and mosaic pieces, hypocaustum pieces), weapons (arrow tips, spears, knives) and military equipment accessories.

La Răsărit de Câmpulung, la circa şase kilometri distanţă pe şosea, se înalţă Dealul Măţău.  Zona se află la poalele Carpaților Meridionali, în Subcarpații Getici, la o altitudine variind între 650 și 1000 m.  Dealul  Măţău  (1017 m) închide spre sud depresiunea Câmpulungului dintre Râul Târgului și Argeșel și spre nord depresiunea Jugur – Poenari, constituind totodată una din frumusețile naturale ale localității. 

The Dâmbovicioara Gorges and the Dâmbovicioara Cave are the most important karst phenomena in Piatra Craiului. The Dâmbovicioara Gorges stretch over a length of about two kilometres, being the most spectacular part, with a truly amazing appearance. The straight walls of the valley seem to be trying to unite in certain sectors, exceeding the height of 200 meters. Over time, at the Dâmbovicioara Gorges were recorded sequences for famous films, among which the beloved series “All sails up!“, a film adaptation after the novel by writer Radu Tudoran. The Dâmbovicioara Cave is located near the road that crosses the Dâmbovicioara Gorges. With a length of over 250 meters, the cave has the appearance of a branching gallery, its route being slightly ascending. The cave can be easily crossed, having the ceiling higher than the structure of man (about 2 meters). It has been known since before 1579, when locals used it as a hideout against invaders. The cave would have been the place of recollection of a hermit, but also the hiding place of a bear, inside the cave being found fossil remains of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus).

The heaviest battles of World War I were fought on Mount Mateiaș, where, in the first line, was the “Nămăiești Army Group". The Mausoleum from Mateiaș was built to honour the heroes fallen on the battlefield. It houses in the basement, in a black crypt, the remains of over 400 soldiers and officers brought from the cemeteries of neighbouring localities or directly from the battlefield. On the side walls there are placed 31 marble tiles on which were chiselled the names of all over 2100 known heroes, fallen in the battles for the defence of the Muscel lands. The Mateiaș memorial complex includes a historical-military museum, a bass-relief and a white stone cup from Albești in which an eternal flame burns in the memory of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives.

Lacul Bâlea este un lac glaciar (format în circ glaciar) situat la o altitudine de 2034 m, în Munții Făgăraș, Județul Sibiu.  Dimensiunile lacului sunt: 360 m în lungime, suprafața de 46508 m2 și adâncimea de 11,35 m.  În anul 1932 lacul Bâlea și o suprafață de circa 180 ha în jurul lacului au fost declarate rezervație naturală. Lacul Bâlea se află la circa 77 km de la orașele Sibiu, 68 km Făgăraș și 85 km de la Curtea de Argeș.  În timpul verii se poate ajunge cu automobilul, pe drumul Transfăgărășan, iar în restul timpului cu telecabina, de la cabana Bâlea Cascadă din apropierea cascadei Bâlea.  În anul 2006 a fost construit în apropierea lacului Bâlea primul hotel de gheață din Europa de Est în forma unui iglu de 16 locuri.  Acesta se construiește în fiecare an, în timpul iernii, în perioada ianuarie - martie, din blocurile de gheață luate din lacul Bâlea. 

Aproape de Barajul Vidraru din Argeş, pe muntele Pleaşa, se află Statuia lui Prometeu sau Monumentul Electricităţii. Statuia a fost realizată în 1965 şi a stârnit destule controverse de-a lungul timpului.  După cum spune profesorul de istorie Marius Vasilescu, ”această statuie, care are 10 metri înălţime şi îl înfăţisează pe Prometeu cu fulgerul în mână, ca simbol al electricităţii, a fost realizată de sculptorul Constantin Popovici în 1965, pe când autorul monumentalei lucrări avea doar 27 de ani. Autorităţile comuniste au dorit ca în anul în care a fost creat barajul Vidraru să fie realizată şi o statuie de dimensiuni impresionante. Grandomania era la ea acasă în acei ani. Statuia a fost realizată în doar câteva luni”, menționează adevărul.ro. 

In the Upper Valley of Argeș, in Arefu commune (Căpățânenii Pământeni village), rises into the rock, at an altitude of 850 meters, a delightful medieval fortress – the Poienari Fortress.  The edifice served as a refuge for Vlad the Impaler, who added towers, walls and dependencies, turning it into a real fortress post against the ottomans. Known as the Fortress of Vlad the Impaler (nicknamed “The Devil”), the Poienari Fortress is fascinating through the legends related to the ruler who brought Romania the fame of being the country of Dracula.  The fortress can be reached by climbing 1480 concrete stairs, which meander through a dense beech forest. The top view is impressive and will fully reward your effort. From the height of the fortress can be admired the beautiful views of the Argeș valley, the Vidraru Dam and the Făgăraș Mountains.
