In the Upper Argeș Valley, in the commune of Arefu, in the village of Căpățânenii Pământeni, stands a charming medieval fortress carved into the rock at an altitude of 850 meters—Poienari Fortress.
The building served as a refuge for Vlad Țepeș, who added towers, walls, and outbuildings, transforming it into a veritable fortress against the Ottomans.

Known as Vlad Dracul's Fortress, Poienari Fortress is fascinating for the legends associated with the ruler who brought Romania fame as the land of Dracula. The fortress can be reached by climbing 1,480 concrete steps that wind through a dense beech forest. The view from the top is impressive and will fully reward your effort.
From the height of the fortress, you can admire the beautiful views of the Argeș Valley, the Vidraru Dam, and the Făgăraș Mountains.
